Review Sir Nigel

I recently embarked on a journey back in time with Arthur Conan Doyle's Sir Nigel, a republished classic from North Publishers, and I'm thoroughly charmed. Let me preface this by saying my experience is in stark contrast to the truly dreadful edition of The White Company I purchased alongside it – a one-star debacle of blurry print and amateurish formatting. Sir Nigel, however, is a delight. This Dover edition is a masterclass in book production. The typesetting is crisp and professional, the illustrations from the 1906 edition are beautifully reproduced, and the cover art is stunning. It's a book you genuinely want to hold and display on your shelf, not hide away in shame.

The text itself is a comfortable read; the font size is generous, the margins are ample, and the overall layout respects the reader's eyes and the book's spine. This is particularly appreciated after wrestling with the cramped, eye-straining pages of its companion volume. The inclusion of Doyle's original preface, explaining his stylistic choices regarding the language, is a nice touch, offering context and insight into the author's intentions. I especially appreciated that each chapter begins on a fresh page, a detail that might seem small but adds significantly to the overall reading experience, a far cry from the all-caps chapter titles jammed onto the same page as the previous chapter's concluding paragraphs.

While I'm still early in my read, I'm already captivated by Doyle's storytelling. The historical setting of the Hundred Years' War is richly evoked, and I'm finding myself swept up in Sir Nigel Loring's journey. It’s fascinating to see a different side of Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, displaying a remarkable talent for historical fiction. I'm impressed by the detail; it feels like Doyle has done his homework, meticulously weaving historical context into a compelling narrative. However, some reviewers have pointed out historical inaccuracies – something I'll keep in mind as I continue reading.

Yes, by modern standards, the novel might feel somewhat overwritten at times – a tendency towards excessive detail and a pacing that some might find slow. Yet, within this detailed world, I'm discovering the nuances of medieval society, the clash of cultures, and the complexities of chivalric ideals against the brutal realities of war. The language, though peppered with archaic terms, adds to the immersive experience, transporting the reader back to 14th-century England and France. I'm certainly not immune to the occasional eye-roll at some of the more protracted descriptions (that five-page horse-taming sequence sounds a bit much!), but overall, the story’s richness more than compensates.

In short, while Sir Nigel may not be a perfect historical novel, its merits undeniably outweigh its minor flaws. The meticulous production quality, coupled with Doyle's engaging narrative, make it a worthy addition to any bookshelf and a far more satisfying read than its less-than-stellar companion volume. I’m looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds and, perhaps emboldened, I might even revisit The White Company once my current adventure concludes.
